How Can severe Ear Pain Be Treated?

Hi I have slight pain in my ears, more on the left side and a little imbalance on Wednesday. The imbalance went away when i took Claritin and my ears still feel little intermittent sharp pain. I have been taking Claritin daily since Wednesday and then started with my nasal spray as well. It is not an ear ache. I went to urgent care and the dr said my ears looked good. I think it is my allergies acting up and I m scheduled to fly to Florida from Hawaii tomorrow. So I m a little anxious about this as normally my ears hurt when I fly. Same kind of pain, sharp intermittent pain when flying. I have no fever, no sore throat. and I can pop both ears. Your advice is appreciated. Sorry I don t want a monthly subscription.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Since you know you are a chronic patient of allergic rhinitis I think this pain in ear comes from allergy. Also, taking count that ear examinations come out clear I believe it has an allergic origin.

You can take antihistamines such Benadryl or Cetirizine for allergic rhinitis. Continue the nasal spray not longer than 5 days. Don't use antibiotics since are not necessary for non-bacterial infection.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Olgeta Xhufka,
